'ECHOES
OF THE PAST -FRAMEWORK FOR THE FUTURE'
Family Friends in conjunction with 'The Black Cultural Archives', created: 'Echoes of the Past -Framework for the Future'. A local history project in Lambeth exploring the struggles of African Caribbean Immigrants and their fight for financial survival. The main aim is to enhance young people and the wider community's knowledge of African Caribbean cultural heritage and improve relations between different generations. This is because many young people of African and Caribbean origin who live in the UK have little or no knowledge of the first immigrants experiences and the cultural practices that were passed from generation to generation. Supported by 'The Heritage Lottery Fund' provides young Lambeth residents with the opportunity to uncover personal stories, memories and experiences of older members of the community to help understand the strategies they employed to survive economically. 'Echoes of the Past - Framework for the Future'culminated in a radio broadcast during Black History Month, October-November 2006. There is an interactive educational resource pack available, providing an invaluable learning tool for schools and community groups. Some of the research gained will be housed for posterity at the 'Black Cultural Archives' in their new headquarters at Raleigh Hall, where it can be used by residents, students, academics and tourists that are interested in the history of Lambeth.
